An Introduction to Osteopathy
Osteopathy is an established system of diagnosis and treatments that focuses on prevention and rehabilitation primarily on the structural and functional integrity of the body. Using many of the diagnostic procedures applied in conventional medical assessment the osteopath aims to restore the body’s natural balance and aid its intrinsic ability to heal through a variety of highly skilled techniques not only to relieve pain, but to remove the cause of it.
Following a detailed case history and examination, treatment is focused on helping to restore harmony throughout the body. This may include muscle and connective tissue stretching, rhythmic joint movements or high velocity thrust technique to improve the range of motion at a joint and encourage blood supply to the joint to aid regeneration. Very gentle releasing techniques are used when treating children or elderly patients.
Treatment is tailored to suit each individual patient reinforced by guidance on diet and exercise.
Osteopathy is now recognised by the government with the passing of the Osteopaths Act (1993). All
Osteopaths are required to register with The General Osteopathic Council. (GOsC).
